It’s been a strange day of frenetic activity mixed with periods of waiting and inaction.
After a busy sendoff at Meyersdal and a very mellow but bumpy bus ride, we arrived at Hoerskoel Landbou just after 12h00 with all runners and support team in high spirits. There’s a palpable feeling of energy and excitement in people as they go about their business, even in the humour and fun that’s had while waiting.
Having not been involved in MiniMad, a dress rehearsal of the logistical effort held about 2 months back in the Cradle of Humankind in Joburg, I know relatively FA about what’s involved, but am fast understanding that it’s not just the running alone that will be taxing on mind and body.
Unpacking the main bus of 90 odd big heavy bags, together with food, fridges, branding and all sorts of other necessary paraphernalia, is seriously tough work. Squat, lift, carry, drop, repeat. It’s like a mini crossfit session complete with full body workout.
But everyone just gets involved, from the largest bloke to the smallest lady. All sukkling, all helping. It’s really refreshing to see.
Once that task was completed, most checked bags, recharged devices and powerbanks – a crucial part of each stop – and then headed to a lunch of boerie rolls, sweet pastries, protein and mylo bars.
Lunch was peppered with conversations about general shift logistics, who’s winning the Open (not a big golfer but think that’s the major on at the moment) and other random topics.
Big on everyone’s mind at camp, is how to play the pre-shift sleep. Go too early and you’re almost doomed to a short 1-2 hour one at best. Leave it to later and you might be woken by a jubilant and noisy Shift 1 as they arrive at camp. Go too late and you simply run out of time. I’m at a complete loss. As the impending suicide shift may keep me from my macbook tomorrow, I thought I’d see if putting hands to keyboard could tire me to the extent I can get a decent 3-4 hours in from about 05h30 to 09h30.
After a paltry 4 hours last night and some heavy lifting today, I’m starting to feel pretty tired, so I think I’ll shut this down and try and read for a while to really give myself a solid chance of sleep.
